In the upper chest, the heartand lungsare protected by the rib cage, and the abdomen contains the majority of organs responsible for digestion: the stomach, where food is broken down; the pancreasand liver, which respectively produce enzymesand bilenecessary for digestion; the kidneys, which filter wastes from bloodbefore excretion as urine; the largeand small intestines, which extract nutrients from food; and the anus, from which fecal wastesare excreted. Finally, the pelvicregion houses both the male and female reproductive organs.
