Fusidic acid is an antibacterialantibioticused particularly for eyeand skininfections. It works by interfering with bacterialproteinsynthesis, specifically by preventing the translocation of the elongation factor G (EF-G) from the ribosome, although it works only on gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcusaureus, Streptococcus and Corynebacteriumminutissimum. It was first isolated in 1962from the fungus Fusidiumcoccineum, and later from Mucorramannianus and Isariakogana.
It is delivered as an ointment, a cream or eye drops.
