Prontosil is the first successful oral antibioticdeveloped by Gerhard Domagk, who received the 1939Nobel Prize in Medicine. He began experiments in 1932, but did not publish until 1935, after I.G. Farbenhad obtained a patent. Prontosil is a red azo dyethat is a precursorto Sulfanilimide, which is produced from prontosil only in an animal's body. Prontosil has a protective effect against streptococci. Prontosil is ineffective against bacteriain a test tube. The effect was first noticed in mice.
