Auramine O

Auramine O, also called Basic yellow 2, Pyocatanium aureum, aizen auramine, Pyoktanin Yellow, Canary Yellow, Pyoktanin, or C.I. 41000, is a diarylmethane dyeused as a fluorescent stain. It has the appearance of yellow needle crystals. It can be used to stain acid-fastbacteria(eg. Mycobacterium, where it binds to the mycolic acidin its cell wall) in a way similar to Ziehl-Neelsen stain. It is very soluble in water and soluble in ethanol. It can be used as a fluorescent version of Schiff reagent.
Auramine O can be used together with Rhodamine Bas the Truant auramine-rhodamine stainfor Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It can be also used as an antisepticagent.
