Chloroxylenol

Chloroxylenol (4-chloro-3,5-dimethylphenol) is a chemical compoundwith the formulaC{{{else{{{test|}}}|{{{test{{{test|}}}|{{{then|}}}}}}}}}}|then=8}}H{{{else{{{test|}}}|{{{test{{{test|}}}|{{{then|}}}}}}}}}}|then=9}}ClO{{{else{{{test|}}}|{{{test{{{test|}}}|{{{then|}}}}}}}}}}|then={{{1}}}|}} and CAS number88-04-0. It is commonly used in antibacterial soapssuch as Dettol; in agarpatch studies, it has been found to kill a wide variety of microbes, including bacteria, fungi, and the superbugMRSA, within 15 seconds. Its antibacterialaction is due to disruption of cell membranepotentials, blocking production of adenosine triphosphate(effectively starving the cells).
Chloroxylenol is not significantly toxicto humansand other mammalsbut is toxic to fish. It is a mild skinirritantand may trigger allergicreactions in some individuals.
