Orthophenyl phenol

Orthophenyl phenol, 2-phenyl phenol, o-phenyl phenol, 2-hydroxybiphenyl, o-xenol, or orthoxenol, is a phenolicbiocideused as a preservative. It has the appearance of colorless crystalline flakes, with melting point 55-57 °C. It has trade name Dowicide and Torsite. It has relatively low toxicity and mild characteristic odor.
It is a fungicideused for waxing citrus fruits. As a food additive, it has E numberE231. Its sodium salt, sodium orthophenyl phenol, has E number E232.
It is one of the chemicals that the Hyperactive Children's Support Grouprecommends be eliminated from the diet of children.
It is also used for disinfection of seed boxes. It is a general surface disinfectant, used in households, hospitals, nursing homes, farms, laundries, barber shops, and food processing plants. It can be used on fibers and other materials. It is used to sterilizehospital and veterinary equipment. Other uses are in rubber industry and as a laboratory reagent.
Vapors of orthophenyl phenol and thymolare used for fumigation. Orthophenyl phenol is not very effective in that form, though. [1]
It is also used as an intermediate for synthesis of dyesand resins.
Its CAS numberis 90-43-7[2]and its SMILESstructure is OC(C=CC=C2)=C2 C1=CC=CC=C1.
