The Autism Awareness Campaign UK was launched in 2000by parents Ivan and Charika Coreain response to an autismdiagnosis ascribed to their son, Charin.
The Corea family campaigns on a range of issues, including autism and the labour market, autism and education, autism and minorityethnic communities, and other areas where they believe there is a shortfall in public-service provision. Additionally, they have lobbied for greater awareness of the condition and for independent research on the causes of autism. They campaign for the large number of people with autism in the United Kingdom, which includes many children.
The 'Autism Awareness Campaign' of 2002was successful in initiating debates in the Parliament of the UKas well as the Scottish Parliament. Ivan Corea was appointed a London 2012 Olympic bidAmbassador by Lord Coe. Additionally, a major conference on autism was held at the King's Fundin Londonas well as a service for autism at St. Paul's Cathedral.
The Coreas were nominated for the Beacon Prizein 2004for their philanthropic achievements, and received the Beacon Highly Commended Award Certificate for Leadership. "We are delighted to receive this Beacon Award Highly Commended Certificate. Autism is now an election issue. We have appealed to Tony Blair, Michael Howardand Charles Kennedyto take autism seriously and look at providing better public services for the 520,000 people autism and 90,000 children with autism," Ivan Corea said.[1]
