Spheroplast
A spheroplast is a gram-negative bacteriumfrom which the cell wall has been almost completely removed as by the action of penicillin. If a spheroplast is transferred to a hypotonic solution, it will lyse.
From Dorlans Medical Dictionary:
"Spheroplast (sphe·ro·plast) a bacterial, yeast, or fungal cell that results after partial removal of the rigid cell wall, which forms a membrane-bound cell with a spherical shape that is dependent for its integrity on an isotonic or hypertonic medium."
