Transpeptidase

A transpeptidase is a bacterialenzymewhich cross-linksthe peptidoglycanchains to form rigid cell walls. The antibioticpenicillinbinds to and inhibits the activity of the transpeptidase enzyme. Because of the interaction between penicillin and transpeptidase, this enzyme is also known as "penicillin binding protein."
