Adapalene is a chemical compound that is primarily used as a topical treatment for acne. It is a retinoid, meaning it is chemically similar to Vitamin A, and is currently sold by Galderma Laboratoriesunder the trade name Differin in many different forms. In pure form, adapalene is a white to off white powder that is insoluble in water.

History

Adapalene was approved in 1996by the FDAfor use in the treatment of acne.

Adapalene is available in four different forms: gel, solution, pledglets and cream.

Adapalene is indicated for acne vulgaris.

Pharmacodynamics

Adapalene in small concentrations is a moderator of cellular differentiation, keratinization, and inflammatory processes. The exact mode of action of adapalene is unknown.

Pharmacokinetics

Adapalene is applied topically to the skin, and its absorption through this medium is very low. Only trace amounts of adapalene have been found in the plasma of chronically treated patients.
