Snoezelen
Snoezelen or controlled multisensory stimulation is a therapy for people with severe mental disabilities that involves exposing the patients to soothing and stimulating light, color, scents and music in specially designed "snoezelen rooms".
Originally developed in the Netherlandsin the 1970s, snoezelen rooms have been established in institutions all over the world and have become especially popular in Germany, where more than 1200 exist.
Snoezelen therapy is employed in the treatment of autismand other developmental disabilities, dementia, and brain injury.
The term "snoezelen" (pronounced like "SNOOTSelen") is a neologismformed from the Dutch"snuffelen" (to sniff, to snuffle) and "doezelen" (to doze, to snooze).
