Diversion colitis

Diversion colitis is an inflamationof the colon which can occur as a complication of ileostomyor colostomy, often occurring within the year following the surgery. It can also occur in a neovaginacreated by colovaginoplasty, sometimes several years after the original procedure.
In many milder cases after ileostomy or colostomy, diversion colitis is left untreated and disappears naturally. If treatment is required, possible treatments include short-chain fatty acid irigation, steroidenemas and mesalazine.
