Toll (gene)
The Toll genes encode members of the Toll-like receptorclass of proteins. Toll genes were originally identified in the fruit flyDrosophila melanogaster in 1988. Since then, eleven known mammalianToll genes have been identified. Both mammalian and invertebrateToll genes are required for innate immunity. In Drosophila, Toll also has a role in dorsal-ventral axisdetermination in the embryo.
