The Matrimandir is a building holding a meditationchamber. It is still under construction and is located in Auroville— a model "universal township" in the making, initiated by The Motherof the Sri Aurobindo Ashram. Auroville is situated at the Bay of Bengal in the state of Tamil Nadu— about 12 kilometres north of Pondicherry, in India.

The Matrimandir is spherical in shape and has the largest optically perfect lead glassglobe in the world inside its Inner Chamber in the upper hemisphere of the building. The Matrimandir and its surrounding gardens in the central Peace Area can be visited. Registered guests of Auroville can obtain passes to sit inside and meditate at specific time slots of the day.

Matrimandir Controversy

Image:Matrimandir.gif Patrizia Norelli-Bacheletclaims that the true dimensions of the Matrimandir or the Mother's Temple were not respected by the architects and builders which completed the structure which now stands in Auroville. This claim, expressed fully by the Matrimandir Action Committeeformed in 2003, has met with much controversy and is denied by the builders of the temple in Auroville. In 2005 the Matrimandir Action Committee's admissions were accepted into the archives departments of both the Sri Aurobindo Ashram and Auroville. Details of the original dimensions and sacred geometry of the Matrimandir, according to Norelli-Bachelet, can be found in her work, "The New Way Volumes 1 & 2". |]]
