Avitaminosis

Avitaminosis is any diseasecaused by chronic or long-term vitamindeficiency or caused by a defect in metabolic conversion, such as tryptophan to niacin. They are designated by the same letter as the vitamin. Avitaminoses include

  • avitaminosis A, xerophthalmiaor night blindness
  • thiaminedeficiency causes beriberi
  • niacindeficiency causes pellagra
  • vitamins B6 and B12 deficiency causes anemia
  • avitaminosis C leads to scurvy
  • vitamin Ddeficiency causes rickets
  • vitamin Kdeficiency causes bleeding

Conversely hypervitaminosisis the syndrome of symptoms caused by over-retention of fat-soluble vitamins in the body.
