Ergosterol

Image:Ergosterol.png Ergosterol (ergosta-5,7,22-trien-3β-ol), a sterol, is the biological precursor to Vitamin D2. It is turned into viosterolby ultravioletlight, and is then converted into ergocalciferol, which is a form of Vitamin D.

Ergosterol is a component of fungalcell walls, serving the same function that cholesterolserves in animalcells. The presence of ergosterol in fungal cell walls coupled with its absence in animal cell membranes makes it a useful target for antifungal drugs.eo:ergosterolo ja:????????

Mr.Dnyanesh Sarang, Student of MUICT, Mumbai University (India) has separated and discoveredand isomer of Ergosterol peroxide from ?Hyattella cribriformis? sponge first time. Dnyanesh has worked in National Institute of Oceanography which is government institute for maring research. The project undertaken was GAP-0497 project(Development of Potential Drugs from the Indian Ocean). Dnyanesh has further proved the antioxidant activity of this isomer. He had proved how one can use this isomer in pharmaceutical production instead of other antioxidants. He had successfully used the same molecule in some of cosmetic formulations also.
