Freshman Fifteen

The dreaded Freshman Fifteen is the popular name for the weight gainof fifteen pounds sometimes occurs during a university student's freshman year. It is sometimes called the Freshman Five, or more in jest, the Freshman Fifty. Though it is obviously part myth, factors leading to sudden weight gain include snacking while studying, late night take-out food, increased alcohol intake, termination of high school physical education class and poor quality/high calorie vending machine and cafeteria food.

Freshmen also tend to be at an age and a stage in their physical development when weight gain is healthy and normal.

At the same time, skipping meals and increased stress are just as likely to cause weight lossin new students.

The lifestyle change of entering university coupled with a sudden fluctuation in weight are also contributing factors in malnutritionand eating disorders, especially among female students.
