Antepartum haemorrhage (spelled Antepartum hemorrhage in the United States) is when bleeding from the vagina occurs in pregnantwomen before birth; it is generally considered to be any vaginal bleeding after the 28th week. It is a medical emergencyas it usually indicates a severe problem with the pregnancy, frequently with the placenta. When untreated it can cause death to the mother and/or fetus. It is important to realize that even with no abdominal and/or pelvic pain at all, third-trimester bleeding is a serious medical emergency, and that medical attention must be sought immediately if it should occur. If there is no way of getting medical attention then a call for helpmust be made.
