Total body irradiation
Total Body Irradiation (TBI) is a radiotherapytechnique used to ablatethe bone marrowand immune systemprior to bone marrow transplantationor peripheral blood stem cell transplantation. It may also be used as part of high-dose treatment of some leukaemiasand lymphomas. The aim of this type of ablative therapy is to prevent rejectionof the transplanted cells.
During TBI the whole body is literally irradiated to a dose which, though modest by normal radiotherapy standards, would be lethal were rescue with the transplant not to follow directly.
