List of -ectomies
The suffix '-ectomy', often used in medicine, means 'to remove'.
- Adenoidectomy- The surgical removal of the pharyngeal tonsils, also known as the adenoids.
- Appendicectomy- The surgical removal of the appendix, also known as an appendectomy.
- Cholecystectomy- The surgical removal of the gallbladder.
- Clitoridectomy- The partial or total removal of the external part of the clitoris. Clitoridotomy is the removal or splitting of the clitoral hood.
- Colostomy- The surgical connection of the colonto the anterior abdominal wall.
- Discectomy- A surgical procedure involving the dissection of an extravasted segment of the intervertebral disc.
- Endarterectomy- The removal of plaquefrom the lining of the artery otherwise constricted by a buildup of fatty deposits.
- Frenectomy- The removal of the frenulumfrom the penis(not the same as [[circumcision, but often done at the same time on newborn males)
- Gastrectomy- The partial or full removal of the stomach.
- Hemicorporectomy- The surgical amputationof the entire body below the waist, including the legs, genitalia, urinary system, pelvicbones, anus, and rectum.
- Hysterectomy- The surgical removal of the uterus.
- Laminectomy- The trimming or surgical removal of the lamina, portion of the spinal vertebrae.
- Laryngectomy- The surgical removal of the larynx, which involves separating the airway from the mouth, nose, and esophagus.
- Mastectomy- The surgical removal of one of both breasts. A masectomy can be either partial or complete.
- Oophorectomy- The surgical removal of a femaleanimal's ovaries, also called spaying.
- Orchidectomy- Any process whereby a biological male(human or animal) loses the use of his testes. Also known as an orchiectomy.
- Parathyroidectomy- The surgical removal of one or more of the parathyroid glands.
- Partial vulvectomy- The partial removal of the vulva.
- Penectomy- The partial or complete removal of the penis. Also known as a pendectomy.
- Photorefractive keratectomy- The alteration of the corneaby means of a laser.
- Posthectomy- More commonly known as circumcision, the surgical removal of the foreskinof the penis. Also known as a prepucectomy, as the medical term for the foreskin is the prepuce.
- Radical vulvectomy- The complete removal of the vulva.
- Salpingo-oophorectomy- The removal of both the ovaries and the fallopian tubes, more commonly perfomed in animals than in humans.
- Splenectomy- The surgical removal of the spleen.
- Stapedectomy- The removal of ossified stapesfrom the ear that are then replaced by a prosthesis.
- Thrombectomy- The excision of an abnormal or dangerous bloodclot.
- Thymectomy- The surgical removal of the thymus gland.
- Thyroidectomy- The removal of all or part of the thyroid gland.
- Tonsillectomy- The removal of the tonsils.
- Vaginectomy- The removal of all or part of the vagina.
- Vasectomy- The surgical tying of the vas deferens, tubes that connect to the male testesand transport sperm, done for the purposes of sterilization in males.de:Ektomie
